Johnson outboard timing adjustment.
The carbs does not have an 'idle stop' adjustment. The important is to get the carbs starting to open at the timing specified when the arrow on #47 lines up with the roller on the carb (pick up timing). From that point and down in rpm, it is all about reducing timing to get correct idle rpm. Only two timing adjustments to be set: 1: Pick-up timing.

I can not find my feeler gauges to set the initial .02 setting but don't think i need to as according to the machinists site as this is only an initial setting and i need the points to open as my timing marks pass another mark on the armiture/magneto plate mark.and a washer. There is a slot such that when the screw is losened you can advance the initial timing for idle moving the screw in the slot to the right or front of motor which increases the idle.Do not adjust the lever which is pushed by the. roller lever-this is max timing and should only be adjusted by an OMC dealer.

You firstly have to make sure that your cable puls the throttle all the way back. If this does not happen you have to adjust your cables. The roller on the throttle arm of the carb should just touch the cam on the magneto stator as the arrow mark on the cam aligns with the throttle arm.
Re: 1968 18 HP Evinrude ignition timing I loosened the cam, actually took it off so that I could look at it and understand how the adjustment worked. The bolt at the high speed end goes though a hole so that end cannot really be adjusted. The boat was hard to start from sitting a couple of years but once it got going it would run pretty good. Idle was low and would stall going into gear. To set the timing on that 115hp Evinrude, have the s/plugs out, and have the throttle at full, set that timer base under the flywheel tight against the rubber stop on the end of the full spark timer advance stop screw (wire it against that stop if necessary). Rig a spark tester and have the spark gap set to 7/16".
